I'd suggest trying to start the ECCE data server outside the ECCE user interface using the "start_ecce_data_server" script in the server/ecce-admin directory. Until you can get that to work there is no need to confuse the issue with trying to start the ECCE messaging server. You'll need to run the start_ecce_data_server script as the same user who owns script (meaning the user it was installed under).
If no progress can be made in figuring out the data server problem, there is always compiling ECCE from source code instead of using the binary distribution. That normally resolves issues like this related to specific platforms.
