Parallel execution takes longer than serial

When I run the example: Catom-pspw.inp in parallel, using parallel.x, it takes longer than in serial. I want to run nwchem on a Dual Quad Xeon E5603 workstation. How should I conpile nwchem? thank you very much, don burgess
