Could you please rename nwchem-6.8.1-release to nwchem-6.8.1, then set NWCHEM_TOP accordingly? mv /home/john/nwchem-6.8.1-release /home/john/nwchem-6.8.1 export NWCHEM_TOP=/home/john/nwchem-6.8.1
